The Fast Gadgets Verdict

The MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 Pro is a significant upgrade over the standard MacBook Pro 14 M5 reviewed on this site — not just in chip performance but in connectivity. The M5 Pro brings Thunderbolt 5 at 120Gb/s (three times faster than the base M5’s Thunderbolt 4), Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and the full M5 Pro chip with up to 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU versus the base M5’s 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. These are meaningful real-world advantages for professionals whose workflows depend on high-bandwidth external storage, fast wireless connectivity, and sustained maximum processing power.

At KSh 317,000 without charger for the 24GB/1TB configuration, this is a serious professional investment. It sits above the MacBook Pro 14 M5 base (KSh 227,000) and below the MacBook Pro 16 M5 Pro series. For professionals who need the absolute best 14-inch laptop performance available today — this is it.

Our rating — 9.5/10 for professional 14-inch laptop performance. The strongest Mac portable available in Kenya at this size.

Right for You?

The MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 Pro is for professionals whose work is genuinely demanding — video editors working on complex 4K and 8K timelines, software developers running large builds and multiple heavy applications simultaneously, ML engineers running local models, 3D artists rendering complex scenes, and audio engineers working on large sessions. If your work falls into these categories and you need the best compact Mac available, this is the machine. If your work is standard professional productivity, light creative tasks, or even moderate video editing — the MacBook Air M5 at KSh 165,000 or the MacBook Pro 14 M5 base at KSh 227,000 serve those needs at significantly lower cost.

Thunderbolt 5 — The Connectivity Leap That Matters

Thunderbolt 5 at 120Gb/s is three times faster than the Thunderbolt 4 on the MacBook Air M5 and the base MacBook Pro 14 M5. For most everyday users this speed difference is invisible. For the professionals this machine is built for, it is transformative.

Video editors who work with high-resolution 4K and 8K footage from external RAID drives need maximum bandwidth to read and write large video files in real time without dropped frames or proxy workarounds. Thunderbolt 5 at 120Gb/s handles this at speeds that Thunderbolt 4 cannot — professional NAS arrays, high-speed SSDs, and eGPUs all operate at their full rated speeds rather than the 40Gb/s ceiling that Thunderbolt 4 imposes.

Developers who use Thunderbolt docking stations with multiple peripherals — external displays, high-speed storage, audio interfaces, and networking — benefit from the additional bandwidth that keeps all of those devices operating simultaneously without contention. The three Thunderbolt 5 ports also support driving up to three external displays over a single Thunderbolt port — a multi-monitor setup that significantly exceeds what the base M5 model supports.

The MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 Pro Chip — Substantially More Than the Base M5

The M5 Pro with 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU is a different chip category from the base M5’s 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. The performance difference is not incremental — it is the difference between a capable everyday chip and a professional workstation processor.

In video editing, the M5 Pro processes more streams of high-resolution video simultaneously — a complex 4K timeline with many layers, effects, and colour grades runs smoothly at full resolution where the base M5 would require proxies or reduced playback resolution. In software development, large compilation jobs that take several minutes on the base M5 complete significantly faster on the M5 Pro because more CPU cores work in parallel. In 3D rendering and ML inference, the 20-core GPU handles more parallel computation per cycle than the 10-core GPU.

The active cooling system maintains these peak performance levels indefinitely — the M5 Pro runs at full speed during a three-hour video render the same as it does during the first minute. The MacBook Air, with its fanless design, would throttle that same render partway through.

Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 — Why the M5 Pro Gets What the Base M5 Does Not

One of the more surprising distinctions between the base MacBook Pro 14 M5 and the M5 Pro is wireless connectivity. The base M5 has Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 — the same as the M4 Pro model. The M5 Pro adds Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip, which enables Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

Wi-Fi 7’s multi-link operation — the ability to use multiple Wi-Fi bands simultaneously — directly benefits professionals who transfer large files over wireless networks, work in congested office Wi-Fi environments, and rely on cloud storage for large creative assets. The connection is faster and more reliable than Wi-Fi 6E, particularly in environments with many competing devices. For a professional creative who regularly transfers 50GB+ project files between machines over Wi-Fi, this is a meaningful daily workflow improvement.

Battery — 24 Hours With Professional Performance

The MacBook Pro 14 M5 Pro delivers up to 24 hours of battery life — matching the base M5 MacBook Pro and significantly exceeding the 22 hours of the M4 Pro model it replaces. For a laptop with this level of processing capability and active cooling, maintaining 24-hour endurance reflects the M5 Pro chip’s efficiency improvements over the M4 generation.

In practical professional use — a mix of demanding application work, video calls, and lighter tasks throughout a working day — the M5 Pro comfortably covers a full professional day away from a power outlet. The included 96W USB-C Power Adapter with MagSafe 3 fast charging restores 50% battery in approximately 30 minutes when a quick top-up is needed.

MacBook Pro 14-inch M5 Pro vs MacBook Pro 14 M5 — What You Get for KSh 90,000 More

Our pick: The KSh 90,000 difference (comparing no-charger base variants) buys Thunderbolt 5 at triple the bandwidth, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, significantly more CPU and GPU cores, and 24GB base RAM versus 16GB. For professionals whose workflows use high-bandwidth external storage, demand maximum sustained processing power, and benefit from Wi-Fi 7 connectivity — the M5 Pro is worth every shilling of the premium. For users whose heaviest workloads are well within the base M5’s capability and who do not need Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth — the base M5 at KSh 90,000 less is the smarter financial decision.
